SSN midseason review: GIANTS Netball

AFTER a slow start to the season the GIANTS started to build into some form but have had a relatively inconsistent year. A draw against the Fever set tongues wagging with Caitlin Bassett believing she had scored the winning goal only for it not to be counted ultimately summing up the GIANTS start to the year.

Ladder: 5th
Win-loss: 3-1-5
Percentage: 96.35%
Bonus points: 17

Overview:

The GIANTS farewelled a couple of key players at the end of 2018 with Serena Guthrie and Susan Pettitt both departing the club with the latter retiring. They both played an integral role for the GIANTS spurring them onto finals and without them this season they have struggled to generate the same momentum only mustering up three wins for the year.

Surprises:

Amy Parmenter has proven to be a revelation in wing defence for the GIANTS winning back plenty of ball and contesting hard for every possession. The tenacious defender has stood up under pressure and made the position her own with her impeccable timing and good read of the play to get hands to ball. The 21-year-old has slotted seamlessly into the side and offers both defensive pressure and attacking intent to surge the ball down the court. Though she has been costly at times throwing the ball around her explosiveness to regain possession is second to none racking up 20 intercepts so far this season making her a valuable member to the GIANTS defence.

Improvements:

It has been spoken about plenty of times before, the GIANTS are struggling to find that connection and flow in attack credit to their new look side. With the inclusion of Caitlin Bassett and existing GIANTS member Jo Harten the team have had difficulty gelling. Though at times they have picked teams apart with their accuracy to post and general netball knowledge they have been unable to maintain their dominance for a four quarter performance against the top teams. Both game changers in their own right the combination between the two can be challenging given their similar game styles.

Expectations:

If the GIANTS can work out their issues in attack they could pose a real threat to the competition given their ability to score easily and create turnovers.
