SSN Head to Head: Round 13

IN each round we will identify one key match-up, provide an in-depth analysis of both players and compare the two styles.

WEST COAST FEVER v. QUEENSLAND FIREBIRDS

Courtney Bruce (GK) V. Romelda Aiken (GS)

With neither side able to make finals both the Fever and Firebirds still have plenty to play for heading into next year. It will be the first time this season that both Romelda Aiken and Courtney Bruce line up on one another, with Aiken out with injury the last time they played in Round 6.

The Firebirds goal shooter is a commanding presence at the post with her strong holds and aerial ability a key feature in her game. She has been criticised in recent times for her accuracy but has well and truly stood up since the World Cup, lifting both her load and accuracy in the circle. Her connection with Gretel Tippett is near on unstoppable with the two combining to be a dominant force in the attacking third. Aiken’s ball control is second to none, reining in errant passes and showcasing her silky footwork to manoeuvre closer to the post. Both Caitlyn Nevins and Jemma Mi Mi are crucial to Aiken’s success with the two able to deliver well-weighted passes into the tall shooter.

Bruce is renowned for her physical presence and ability to contest each and every pass that comes her way, making her a crucial member for the Fever side. The captain leads from the front, applying strong hands over pressure and displays a persistent attitude time and time again to reset and create pressure. Her quick footwork and ability to read the game makes her damaging in the defensive third, picking off loose ball and forcing turnovers. She works well in tandem with Stacey Francis and Shannon Eagland to cause confusion in the circle and while she has had an interrupted season due to injury, Bruce offers plenty of cover down back and does not take a backwards step.

Both players can hold their own and know what it takes to win given their recent success, but have struggled throughout the season to have their usual impact. Bruce must limit the influence of the umpire and stay away from the whistle if Fever are to win given the accuracy and flair of Aiken in the circle. It will be an exciting contest given Bruce thrives on high balls and is not afraid to go hunting, meaning Aiken must be on her game if the Firebirds are to notch up their first win of the season.
