Saracens Mavericks claim BiG Showdown inaugural title

AFTER a weekend filled with close encounters and high intensity in the BiG Showdown, it was the Saracens Mavericks that ran out supreme against Team Bath Netball. At the end of the round robin, the Mavericks and Team Bath finished first and second respectively with Knights Netball coming in third narrowly missing out on the chance to play off for the title. Surrey Storm snatched up fourth spot while Sirens Netball and Severn Stars round out the bottom the ladder.

The grand final was nothing short of a tight tussle, however the Mavericks maintained the lead for the entire match no matter how slender it was. At each break the lead was no more than one goal, highlighting just how intense the game was with each side going blow for blow and attempting to weather the storm. But it was a final quarter blitz that all but gifted the Mavericks the all important six-goal win.  With the likes of Saracens goaler George Fisher a dominant and consistent threat under the post along with Kadeen and Sasha Corbin it was always going to be a challenging match for Team Bath. Defensively Razia Quashie was also an obstacle Bath had to overcome – which they simply could not despite having the likes of Sophie Drakeford-Lewis and Kim Commane. Team Bath also had some handy defenders in the likes of Imogen Allison, Eboni Usoro-Brown and Summer Artman but it was not enough to get them over the line and gift them the BiG Showdown title.

In other matches throughout day two the Mavericks defeated the lowly Severn Stars by seven goals in a precursor to the grand final. The Knights Netball racked up a convincing win against Sirens and showcased their impressive aerial ability swatting balls out of the air and collecting timely deflections to disrupt the flow of play. The Severn Stars had glimpses of brilliance but struggled to maintain that consistency throughout the tournament. Meanwhile Surrey Storm outclassed the Sirens in a bottom of the table clash to edge themselves slightly higher on the ladder.

In other notable events throughout the BiG Showdown fan favourite and netball super star Serena Guthrie was inducted into the Hall of Fame for Sport at University of Bath for her contribution to the team.
