SSN Head to Head: Round 14

IN each round we will identify one key match-up, provide an in-depth analysis of both players and compare the two styles.

SUNSHINE COAST LIGHTNING v. ADELAIDE THUNDERBIRDS

Phumza Maweni (GK) v. Maria Folau (GS)

Both teams have plenty to fight for with top spot on the line for the Lightning and a chance to jump into sixth for Adelaide. After being struck by injuries in the goal circle Folau is likely to pull on the goal shooter bib up against Maweni who has rapidly developed for the Lightning.

The Lightning have been in hot form throughout the season, steadily building and knocking off fellow top four contenders time and time again thanks to their defensive pressure. Maweni is not afraid to go out hunting using her impressive vision and read of the play to her full advantage to win the ball across the third. Her timely deflections and quick feet enables her to get to contests and create doubt while her hands over pressure denies easy access into the circle. The Lightning goal keeper is skilled both in the air and on the ground to track the ball and regain possession for her side. She has showcased her netball nous to position cleverly under the post to take game winning rebounds and can wear her opponents down with her smothering defence. Her connection with teammate Karla Pretorius is second to none with the two combining to create a formidable wall in defence and cause confusion in the circle.

The Silver Fern has been a great addition to the Thunderbirds side with her ability to turn and shoot from literally anywhere in the circle. She turns with confidence and backs herself from range thanks to her impressive rhythm and accuracy to post. Folau is cool, calm and composed with ball in hand unafraid to swing the ball around the circle and re-position if uncomfortable to take the shot. She does a wealth of work across the court to bring the ball down while her vision to set up plays in the attacking third makes her hard to stop when she is on song. Folau is not afraid to take a strong drive on the baseline or unleash a dodge in the circle making her a key target for the Thunderbirds while her connection with Chelsea Pitman out the front has grown rapidly throughout the season. She oozes plenty of class and experience which will be important in the T’birds front line heading into what could be her last game at the club.

The Lightning defence has been a staple hold for the Sunshine Coast throughout the season making for an interesting contest between Maweni and Folau. Maweni is renowned for her strong hands over pressure and physical game style which could frustrate Folau if she is unable to break free of Maweni’s hold. Folau will have to shoulder a lot of the load in the circle given injuries to her shooting teammates meaning if Maweni can get on top early the Thunderbirds will struggle to impact the scoreboard.
