Roses too strong in game two of Netball Legends Series

ENGLAND Roses came away with another stunning win in the Netball Legends Series, taking out the Jean Hornsby Trophy after downing the Vitality Netball Superleague (VNSL) All Stars in game two of the series, 67-44. While the All Stars certainly brought their A-game in the second match, they lacked the depth required to really challenge the close-to full strength Roses, who were much cleaner and more cohesive than the All Stars unit. While the Roses defence was influential once more creating plenty of turnover ball, the work rate of Roses co-captain Nat Haythornthwaite did wonders with the wing attack creating continuous ball movement out the front. Her quick feet and agility seemed too much for the All Stars to compete with, spotting the likes of Helen Housby, Ellie Cardwell and, later, Sophie Drakeford-Lewis. A seven-goal half-time margin quickly extended into another excellent lead, following the result of the first match on Wednesday. Up the front for the All Stars, Liana Leota was again in fine form, propelling constant ball into Malawian superstar Joyce Mvula and Jamaican duo, Rebekah Robinson and Gezelle Allison. But realistically, the lack of attacking depth inside the goal circle caught up with the All Stars side, with the defensive unit of Sam May and Jo Trip working overtime to create turnovers but not enough to counteract the constant strength of Layla Guscoth, Razia Quashie and Fran Williams who rendered the All Stars squad much more inaccurate than the Roses frontline. Stay tuned for our full series wrap on Monday.
